This month we are talking about the JAW - also known as your temporomandibular joints or TMJ for short.
Between talking and eating each of us gives our TMJ a workout everyday and in my experience it is common for patient’s to be surprised at how sore and restricted they are when assessed in the clinic. Often without knowing it, dysfunction of our jaw can be the beginning of some major pain and discomfort and it’s important to know the signs and symptoms that may indicate trouble.
So what is TMJ dysfunction and how do I know if I have it?
Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) is a broad term we use to describe your jaw simply not working the way that it should - smoothly and effectively. TMD may present in a variety of ways such as:
- Trouble opening your mouth all the way
- Deviation to one side when opening your mouth
- Fatigue or ache when chewing
- Clicking or popping sounds or sensation
- Painful to touch
- Headaches
Why does TMD occur?
There are multiple reasons as to why you may be experiencing a disorder of your jaw, the most common of which include:
- Trauma to your mouth / face
- Dental problems
- Clenching/grinding in your sleep
- Stress
- Associated neck dysfunction or injury
What can I do about it?
If any of the above applies to you there are a few things you can do at home that may help, such as:
- Self massage
- Neck stretches
- Heat
- De-stress / meditation activities
But most of all if you think you may be experiencing TMD make sure you come into the clinic and get assessed. Treatment of TMJ pain and dysfunction is something that we regularly assist with here at KHC and we’d love to help you in any way we can.
