Walking to a better you!

I'm not sure about you, but with daylight savings ending this week, winter sure feels like it is FAST approaching.

For many of us, this means saying the difficult "goodbye" to afternoons at the beach, BBQs in the park, late night walks for ice cream and dips in the pool.

Or, perhaps you're looking forward to 'hibernation mode', spending evenings by the fire with a good book, a Nextflix show and a hot cup of tea.

Either way, here at the clinic we notice a clear trend; with winter comes an overall decrease in physical and mental health.

This can lead to an increase of back pain, flare ups of chronic conditions and more frequent headaches and migraines.

So, as the weather begins to turn NOW is the time to take charge, and put into practice those habits which are life giving!!! It's time to engage in those positive experiences and sound influences that drive you to avoid those pesky extra winter kilos AND winter blues.

The reality is, our physical and mental health are significantly effected by our habits, how we chose to spend our time, resources and energy.

In the summer, we can tend to spend our time and energy outdoors and active, leading to an overall healthier lifestyle. Throughout these cooler months our healthy habits can tend to suffer, but they don't have to!

One of the easiest, cheapest and most effective healthy habits we recommend here at KHC is a simple 30 minute walk.

Research indicates this simple habit can have significant health benefits, including:

  • Increased cardiovascular and pulmonary (heart and lung) fitness

  • Reduced risk of heart disease and stroke

  • Improved management of conditions such as hypertension (high blood pressure), high cholesterol, joint and muscular pain or stiffness, and diabetes

  • Stronger bones and improved balance

  • Increased muscle strength and endurance

  • Reduced body fat

  • Increased creativity

  • Decreased feelings of anxiety and depression

  • Improvement in memory

  • Decreased rate of cognitive decline

So, grab a jacket and a beanie and get walking! Or, park the car in the furthest spot away from the shops and walk across the car park, head off 15 minutes early to park away from the train station, walk to the park and kick a footy!! All of this incidental exercise will all add up!

If you do have any aches or pains preventing you from getting into this healthy habit, we would love to help. There is no time like the present to get assessed and treated so that no matter the season you can be the healthiest version of you!

We look forward to seeing you soon! For more information on our appointment types and fees, call the clinic on 9336 7330. www.keilorhealthcentre.com
