What's the difference between Osteo, Chiro + Physio?

If you've ever wondered what the difference is between these three professions, you're certainly not alone! As an osteopath this has to be one of THE most common questions I am asked.

Confusion around what each do, what the difference is between each and ultimately which one you should see, is a very common problem.

Often the reason for this confusion is because the question is difficult to answer; In reality there are many similarities and differences between each profession.

What's the same?

  • We are all primary healthcare providers - meaning you do not need a referral to see us.

  • We predominantly treat similar conditions - Musculoskeletal complaints, sports and work injuries, back pain and headaches.

  • We use a combination of similar treatment methods - Manual hands-on therapy and exercise/rehabilitation prescription

So what IS the difference?

Ultimately, it all comes down to each profession's philosophy behind treatment - These differences in philosophy are the key reason each profession tends to treat differently - each prioritising different approaches and treatment methods, some placing larger emphasis on hands on treatment, others through rehab and exercise prescription, patient education and lifestyle management. All of which should be provided by all - but each prioritised differently during your visit.

For an in-depth assessment of each profession's philosophy - check out this article from HBF:

Ok, so which one is best for me?

The one that makes you feel the best! Ultimately, each of these professions aim is to get you feeling better, which treatment techniques and approaches work best for YOU and YOUR BODY may vary and in the end it comes down to personal preference and who you can TRUST the most to get you feeling better.

It's also helpful to note that often these different professions can be complimentary pieces to your recovery process, it doesn't have to be either or, it can be both! Or you may see an OSTEO for one condition, and another profession for a different condition.

Osteopathy worked for me, and so I trust in it. And, if you're going to start somewhere, why not start with Osteopathy!

We'd love to be the reason you fall in love with what Osteos can do for you.
